Our mission

We bring people together and facilitate supportive, playful, and creative activities rooted in craft traditions.

We make creative expression feel approachable.

We don’t have to see ourselves as “artists” in order to practice art skills. Learning creative processes allows you to be expressive in new ways, and changes the world around you. This work is an imperative as well as a delight, and should be accessible to all.

We believe in the importance of making things ourselves.

When we do so, we have the chance for so much gain—we can learn new bits of history, we get an appreciation for what it takes to make a given thing, we get the challenge of wrestling with a low-stakes task and the satisfaction of completing something. We get to revel in the journey of developing a new skill, seeing what we discover along the way, and we get to enjoy the tangible evidence of our efforts and capability in the finished object. We get to practice imperfection and remind ourselves of our own potential.

Because of these values, we will never choose to use AI in any of our work, from caption writing to flyer designing to email answering or spreadsheet making. AI tools are built on the theft of human creative labor, inherently devaluing it. They condition us to subconsciously see ourselves as less capable than we are, and see our individual efforts as less worthwhile. While there are disagreements over how to calculate environmental impacts of AI, we know enough to know we don’t need to participate. That said, we are not interested in shaming how people use it in their own lives; we just ask folks to understand that it contradicts our goals to use it here. And know that all the mistakes are, indeed, our own!

Our open-to-the-public offerings are designed for adults (age 16+) unless otherwise noted, but younger folks are able to participate in Handicraft Hangouts and private classes.
